The main factor that determines whether an image will appear light or dark is the camera exposure. This important characteristic of a photograph is governed by the combination of three camera settings called the exposure triangle and consists of the settings for the shutter speed which controls the duration of the exposure, the aperture which controls the area over which light can enter your camera and the ISO speed which controls the sensitivity of your camera's sensor to a given amount of light. It is therefore important to grasp the basic theory and in addition have sufficient practice to achieve the expertise needed to obtain the correct exposure for your image because several combinations of the exposure triangle can achieve the same result and each setting can also affect other properties of your photograph.
